How Many Teams in MLB?

There are 30 teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). The American League has 15 teams, while the National League also has 15. The teams are divided into divisions, with six teams in the East Division, six teams in the Central Division and three teams each in the West Division of both leagues. Each division is further broken up into two parts: a five-team East/ Central division and a four-team West division.

MLB was originally established as two separate leagues, The American League and National League in 1903. However, during interleague play since 1997, all 30 teams compete against each other regardless of league affiliation.

The roster for each team is composed of 25 players; however, a maximum of 40 players may be active at any given time, depending on the league. Additionally, MLB teams are allowed to carry up to three catchers and seven relief pitchers. As of 2021, there have been over 500 players selected in the annual MLB Draft.

The current team-by-team breakdown for Major League Baseball is as follows:

American League East (Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays); American League Central (Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins); American League West (Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers). National League East (Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins , New York Mets , Philadelphia Phillies , Washington Nationals); National League Central (Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals); National League West (Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants).

MLB also has two official minor league baseball organizations Triple-A Baseball and Minor League BasebalL with teams located across the United States and Canada. Additionally, several independent professional baseball leagues exist outside of MLB’s structure. The total number of teams and players throughout all levels of professional baseball is estimated to be around 400.

In conclusion, Major League Baseball currently consists of 30 teams in two separate leagues, the American League and the National League. With its affiliated minor leagues and independent teams, the total number of professional baseball teams is estimated to be around 400.

In addition to the teams, the league also hosts a draft every year where new players can join MLB teams.
